The Olympic Torch came to Edmonton this past week and I was determined that Amelia and I would witness the ceremony at Churchill Square, even though she won't remember it at all.
I was thinking back to when I was a child and the Olympic flame made it's way to Fort McMurray for the Calgary 1988 games. I had my little candle and the red plastic cup that sat on the upper portion of the candle so that wind wouldn't blow it out. I don't quite remember if my particular candle had been lit by the olympic flame or if someone had simply pulled out a lighter, but it didn't really matter - my ten year old self was swept up with Canadian pride.
Back to the present day and we were heading downtown to witness the same sort of ceremony. Of course, this would be much bigger than what I was a part of all those years ago. I could tell already that there was no way we were going to get a prime viewing location - people must have been there for hours to get a good spot. I met my friend, Becky, and we tried to make our way through the crowd. I say, "tried" because it was an almost impossible task to get through so many people with a baby and a stroller. So, we abandoned that plan and made for higher ground.
There are small viewing platforms that look onto Churchill Square and we hauled baby and stroller up the stairs to get a better look. Not much luck there either. However, a kind gentleman offered to let me get a better view so I could take some photos. Then, I saw it - The Olympic Torch. It was here! I was witnessing history! I turned on the video function on my camera and pressed "record" - I managed to get most of the trip to the stage, but then my view was cut off. My apologies to the kind person who let me take his spot to get some photos (I saw the flame and ended up staying there to record it - I tried to find him afterwards, but he was gone).
I was surprised at how emotional I felt. The good ole Canadian pride was back in full swing again, just like I remembered. But then Amelia began to get fussy and I was brought back to the present. Had to get the girl home. She was such a good sport but she was quite sleepy.
So, we ended up staying for a grand total of half an hour, but it was worth it to me. Amelia was there, and I have the photos and video to prove it.
